Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it earned an impressive inspection rating. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category. In this area, we gave it an A. Arguably the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Contributing to this nursing home's list of strengths, it also was awarded a first-rate long-term care grade. We awarded them an elite strong of A- in this category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

We also awarded this facility a middle of the road score in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a C. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to grade a facility's rehabilitation services To have highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, we weren't able to track down information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The final metric we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Our next area is nursing, where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C in that area. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses spent with residents, in computing our grade in this area. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is far below average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place actually fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.
