Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Nursing grades are tied to nurse staffing levels. This place provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home surprisingly excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the number of hours of care provided.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of short-term care, this nursing home received a grade of just D in this category. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of its better grades. Short-term care grades are typically employed to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. With its weak grade in this area, we were not stunned to discover that this place provided far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 4.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's next highest category was long-term care. As it turns out, with a D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. Facilities that do not fare well in long-term care typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in some of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Frankly, we were a bit worried that this facility vaccinated just 76.94175 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this facility was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.
Facility Inspections
In the final category of inspections, this ended up being this nursing home's weakest link. Inspection grades are based on a facility's recent government inspections. We gave this facility a D in this category, which is a very poor grade. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. We would scrutinize the level of severity of the deficiencies. This particular nursing home was assessed one deficiency by CMS. Fortunately, it wasn't in a category that suggests that it posed a threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We would not recommend this facility under any circumstance.
