Facility Inspections
In addition to earning a great overall score, this facility fared even better in our inspections category which is associated with the facility's recent government inspection reports. We gave it an A+ for this area, which is one of our highest grades. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Unfortunately, it does not appear that we were able to find information about this nursing home's deficiencies. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, this nursing home also was awarded favorable long-term care grades this year. Indeed, we awarded it one of our more favorable scores in that area, with a grade of B+. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the impressive level of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 1.92 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes since it had more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. This facility boasts a really impressive 5.9 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, of which a significant percentage were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. This is one of the more impressive totals of nursing hours we found at any facility in the Scottsdale area. Finally, we also factored some quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. Specifically, we looked at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care. This facility was awarded a grade of C in the category. Short-term care grades are important for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more skilled nursing services. This means a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 32.1 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually below the national average.
