Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this nursing home only received a grade of D for its long-term care score, which was actually one of its more respectable category scores. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. We found that this nursing home gave the vaccine to a relatively low 81.723236 percent of its patients, which is slightly concerning. We were also disappointed with the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 3.11 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is nearly twice the national average.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. There are numerous datapoints within this category. Most of these factors are tied to nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at about 1.5 times the national average in both of these metrics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics helped pull down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our next area, this facility really did not perform very well in this category either. Due to an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this is really as terrible as it gets. Our short-term care scores are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. Based on its grade in this area, we were not stunned to find that this place is well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we looked at. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 30.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor metrics was damning for this nursing home's short-term care score.
