Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. Unfortunately, it does not appear that we were able to find deficiency data for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so favorably is that it was awarded an A+ short-term care score. This is simply as strong as it gets in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. This facility excelled in two key staffing areas we assessed. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Maine in this area with 69.1 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ for its nursing grade. We assessed the licensure of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses were with patients, in determining our rating in this area. This facility provided 5.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by these statistics. In addition to offering impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility outpaced the national average. This is generally a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided with better nursing care and a policy of regularly turning residents to prevent bed sores.
Long-term Care Quality
In our final area, this facility also received a very strong long-term care score, with a grade of A. This topped off a straight A report card. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the impressive level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were pleased by the facility's vaccination record. For example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.31 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
