Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a first-rate nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of A+. Our short-term care grade is commonly used to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To have highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 69.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. Nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A+. There are quite a few subcategories within this area. Many of the subcategories relate to nurse staffing. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient each day, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility was also above average in several of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Facility Inspections
Racking up yet another strong category grade, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. This facility was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we scored was long-term care, where this facility was awarded a grade of A-. This wrapped up an elite report card. Few nursing homes received an A- or better in all four categories. Facilities that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure patients are well cared for. After looking at the impressive nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 97.88519 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.56 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
