Facility Inspections
The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. Its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A-. Our inspection grades are tied to pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded a favorable long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a B in that area, which is one of our better. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. The last statistic we looked at is its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 4.53 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this area, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
An additional reason we rated this facility so highly is that it earned an A+ nursing grade. When computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we assess the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 4 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which was above the national average. Finally, this nursing home also excelled in several quality-based metrics we looked at. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was short-term care. This facility received a grade of C in this category. Short-term care grades are crucial for people looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 32.2 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.
