Facility Inspections
To pair with its relatively modest overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to note that this facility received a great long-term care score. Indeed, we awarded it one of our highest scores in this category with a score of A-. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is too frequently a dangerous condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.83 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility was just about middle of the road in this area.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home wound up receiving a a terrible score in our short-term care area. It received a lowly F in this category. Our short-term care grade is often used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation In order to provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 40 percent of its patients returning home. This was well below average.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to our next area, this nursing home did not perform very well. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is this facility's poorest area. Our nursing score looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This facility averaged just 2.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
