One of the many reasons this place turned out to be a quality nursing home is it earned an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. Although this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home was given quality marks in the category of short-term care. As a result, it received one of our most impressive scores in that category with a score of A+. In crafting these short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. This place offered more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. The last item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Pennsylvania in this area with 68.3 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Nursing grades are primarily tied to a facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provides an incredible 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any nursing home the country. Avoiding serious falls is generally an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses and better safety protocols are employed.

Turning to the fourth area, this facility also performed admirably in the long-term care category. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for this area. This completed a first-rate profile. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to considering the elite volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were impressed by the nursing home's record for vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
