Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless health inspection reports in recent years. We gave them an A+ in this category. Inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received a positive long-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we gave them a B in this area, which is one of our more favorable scores. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 92.90323 percent of its patients, which is slightly less than we anticipated. The last statistic we assessed was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 1.97 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is middle of the pack in this area.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. When calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home averaged a meager 2.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its below average total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home had really bad marks in many of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing falls which led to serious injury. This place was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite concerning in light of the fact that many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of earning a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed is short-term care, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. We awarded this facility a D in that category. Short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Based on its grade in this category, we weren't stunned to find that this place was well below average in terms of the number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the data we looked at. Frankly, this was about what we expected to find. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 42.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
