Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid places with too many severe deficiencies flagged. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a decent score in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of B-. In the area of long-term care, we focus on the amount of care provided by a facility, as opposed to more healthcare-oriented services. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 98.4375 percent of its residents, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility's next highest score was short-term care. Nevertheless, with a D in this area, it still performed relatively badly. Short-term care scores are based on the facility's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated was nursing, which is a weak link for this facility. We gave this nursing home a grade of just D for nursing. In determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses are seeing residents and the levels of training of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. This place also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this measure. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that so many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
