Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong facility is that it received a very impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor dings are not something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also gave this nursing home a score of A- for our short-term care grade. Our short-term care scores are arguably most important for people requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally mandates more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. There are a number of datapoints included in this category. Many of these criteria reflect the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The final area we rated is long-term care. This nursing home was given a C in this category. For residents in need of a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. This place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
