Facility Inspections
The primary reason this facility received a decent overall grade is its impeccable inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our higher scores in that area, with an A+. This is a much better grade than the facility's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively insignificant. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this nursing home, we gave it a high-end long-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of D. When calculating a nursing home's nursing rating, we consider the number of hours nurses commit to patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This nursing home offered only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This facility performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the fourth area, this facility really didn't fare well. Due to an abysmal grade of F in short-term care, this was its weakest area. Short-term care ratings are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we learned that this facility offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents who returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.2 percent of its residents returning home.
