In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this place also earned top notch health inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our higher grades in this category, with an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Another one of this facility's impressive category scores came in the area of long-term care. We gave them one of our stronger scores in that category, with a grade of B+. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia can be a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.98 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this area, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities based on the preexisting medical conditions of patients.

This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. In computing our nursing scores, we weigh both staffing levels and the training levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides an impressive 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average.

The last category we rated is short-term care. We gave it a B- in this area. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from this facility. We found that 33.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually below the national average.
