In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ for nursing. Our nursing score focuses on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of training of those nurses and the number of hours spent with residents. This facility provided 5.7 hours of nursing care per resident daily, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by these statistics. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With less than 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any facility the country in this category. This is usually an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be prevented by offering better nursing care and having a system of moving patients more often.

This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This grade is based on the place's recent government inspections. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. This nursing home was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility also was given an A+ for its short-term care score. Our short-term care ratings are likely most meaningful for patients requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Remarkably, this place provides approximately one and a half times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is generally a great sign. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in New York in this area with 67.2 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Historical

Moving on to our fourth category, this facility received a very strong long-term care rating. We gave it an A in this area, resulting in this facility receiving straight A's. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 95.84664 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.17 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
