Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the main reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it earned a very impressive long-term care rating. In fact, this ended up being its best grade. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition, this facility also earned top notch health inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an A. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B. We weighed the licensure of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses worked with residents, in computing our score in this area. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next area we scored was short-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of B-. Even though this proved to be its lowest category score, this is still not a poor grade. With our short-term care score, we endeavor to create a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, we were not able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below the national average.
