Even though this nursing home's overall grade was terrible, it surprisingly performed well in the area of long-term care. In fact, we gave it a B for that area, which is one of our better scores. This is one of the only good things we can write about this place. Nursing homes that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

As it turns out, its inspection reports were not the source of this nursing home's rock bottom overall grade. In fact, it received a C in this category. Our inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This facility had 3 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but none were category G through L deficiencies. This tells you that inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an imminent risk to patient safety or health. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.

We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. Our nursing score assesses the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. This nursing home fared well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

The final category we looked at was short-term care, where this nursing home received a very poor score in this category as well. Sadly, it received a lowly F in this category, which is obviously a major concern. Our short-term care grades are presumably most critical for individuals requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we learned that this facility offers far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the average facility. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this facility's short-term care score.
