Although we gave this nursing home a terrible overall grade, we gave it an A- for our inspections score. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection ratings. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Turning to the category of long-term care, this facility received just a D in that category. As it turns out, this wound up being one of its better grades. For prospective patients in need of a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable statistic. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.94 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not bad since it had more complex patients.

Historical

We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. The nursing grade assesses several factors, however, the primary one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home averaged just 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is well below average. To go along with its low total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home had bad marks in many of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents having falls which led to serious injury. This facility was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is alarming in light of the fact that so many falls could be prevented with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing score.

The last category we analyzed is short-term care. This nursing home received a poor grade of F in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is more often than not a reliable measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. With a grade of this caliber in this area, we weren't surprised to learn this nursing home was well below average in two of the key staffing figures we looked at. It offered substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of residents that eventually returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 38.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
