While this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. Our inspection grades are based on several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to resident safety. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

We were also stunned to discover that this nursing home received a reasonably solid long-term care grade in our assessment. We gave it a grade of C in this area. Long-term care grades are essential for residents seeking personal care. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 74.545456 percent of its patients. This is many points less than average. Nevertheless, this nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.16 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.

Surprisingly, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C for its short-term care grade, which is not a bad grade. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is often a meaningful measure of a facility's rehabilitation. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was a much stronger area for this facility. It outperformed most nursing homes in this metric with 56.6 percent of its residents returning home.

The next category we analyzed was nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive area. We gave this facility a D in this category. Our nursing grade assesses several data points, many of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic really pulled down this facility's nursing score substantially.
