Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Even though we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable short-term care rating this year. We gave it a B- in that area. Short-term care grades are vital for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. This means a broad scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. We were surprised to find that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. It is important to determine whether this also correlates to a lower quality of care. The last statistic we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 6.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

As it turns out, its government inspection reports were not the source of this facility's bottom of the barrel overall grade. In fact, it received a C in this category. Our inspection ratings are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to patient safety. This place was hit with 5 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but fortunately none were in category J, K or L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to place resident safety or health in imminent harm or jeopardy. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Our next area we assessed is long-term care, in which this nursing home received an F. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. We were a bit concerned this facility vaccinated only 76.233185 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this place was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. This was its best feature in this category.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next category we analyzed is nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. In computing our nursing ratings, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility offered just 0.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This number is significantly below average. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This facility fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these statistics to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
