Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

While this nursing home's overall grade was not bad, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

We also gave this nursing home an impressive score in short-term care. This facility received a grade of B in this category, which turns out to be one of our more impressive grades. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Unfortunately, it does not look like this facility submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to return home from the facility. We found that 5.9 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next area we analyzed was long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a B-. In calculating our long-term care ratings, we scrutinize the assistance with daily living offered to a nursing home's residents. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.2278 percent of its residents, which is more than the average nursing home. This nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we graded was nursing. We awarded this nursing home a B- in that category. The nursing score is based on numerous data points. The most important variable is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it scored well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the number of hours of care offered.
