Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's next highest category was its short-term care grade, where it received a B-. Short-term care grades are commonly used to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to have highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. We were surprised to find that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients that ultimately returned home from this facility and discovered this was this facility's strongest datapoint within this area. We found that it performed well in this area with 64.5 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this metric.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this nursing home an F in the category of long-term care. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care scores. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 95.89041 percent of its patients, which is more than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, its hospitalization rate was far less favorable. We found that this place had 2.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an alarming rate.
Nurse Quality
The next area we graded was nursing, where this nursing home received a bottom of the barrel grade here also. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category, which is obviously a major disappointment. The nursing score weighs a handful of subcategories, many of which are associated with nursing hours. This nursing home offered only 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this area. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this nursing home's nursing score significantly.
