Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

While we were not high on this nursing home's overall score, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our best scores in that category with an A-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively minor. This place received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This nursing home's next best area is short-term care. We gave it a grade of C in this area. This is basically a middle of the pack grade in this category. Short-term care grades are often used to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its level of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. The important question is whether this adversely impacted quality of care. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 5 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

This facility's second least favorable category is long-term care, where it earned a grade of just D in that category. This is a well below average grade. For residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. We were pleased to discover that this facility vaccinated 98.449615 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next area we graded was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this category, which is a rock bottom grade. In determining our nursing ratings, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of the nurses. This place averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is well below average. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found that this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.

Grade: B

In Pampa Nursing Center, 16.02% of Residents Rehospitalized

This tells you the number of rehospitalizations per 1,000 days of short-term care. There is typically a correlation between keeping patients out of the hospital and a nursing home's quality of short-term rehabilitation.

Short-term Care: ER Visits

Grade: B-minus

In Pampa Nursing Center, 13.45% of Patients

This datapoint is a measure of the number of times residents are sent to the emergency room per thousand days of short-term patient care.

Short-term Care: Facilitates Functional Improvement

Grade: B

In Pampa Nursing Center, 76.88% of Resident

This datapoint is a measure of the percent of short-term care patients that experienced functional improvements, such as with activities of daily living. Many in the industry argue this is a reasonable measure of rehabilitation performance.
