Facility Inspections
Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it received an A-. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received a strong grade in our long-term care category. We awarded this nursing home a better than average grade of B in this category. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous health condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. The last statistic we assessed is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 2.68 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, this facility only received a grade of D for its nursing grade, which was actually one of its better category grades. When computing our nursing scores, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. With only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this place's nurse staffing levels were far below average. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This nursing home was above average in two of the major metrics we focus on, with solid marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed is short-term care. This nursing home was given a rock bottom grade of F in that area. Our short-term care scores are probably most meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we considered the number of residents that returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 30.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
