Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it earned a very impressive inspection rating. Inspections is its best category. In this area, we awarded it a grade of A-. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Another strong feature for this nursing home is that it received a very positive long-term care score. In fact, this proved to be its second best category grade. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a B+. For patients in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 67.50232 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be somewhat lower than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home is also above average in the category of short-term care, where it was awarded a grade of B+. It outpaced most nursing homes in this category. Our short-term care grades are critical for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of patients that were able to return home from the facility. We found that 5.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
Nurse Quality
The final area we analyzed was nursing. This nursing home was given a very good nursing rating this year, with a grade of B-. Although this isn't nearly as strong as a few of its other category grades, this remains a decent rating for this area. The nursing grade analyzes many factors, most of which are associated with nursing hours. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, our nursing scores also factor in quality-based assessments, such as preventing major falls. While this facility did not have as many nursing hours as many of the other facilities we assessed, it was still better than average in the area of avoiding falls. This is typically a good indicator of how carefully a nursing home's nursing staff is tending to its residents. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses and better safety protocols are in place.
