In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility really excelled in the category of inspections, where it earned an A+. Few facilities performed better in this category. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

This nursing home also performed well in the area of long-term care. Indeed, we gave it a grade of A- for that area, which is one of our best grades. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 96.16438 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a dangerous condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term care grades are typically used to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation To offer good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 4.5 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Switching gears to the last category, this facility really didn't fare well. With a poor grade of F in nursing, this is this nursing home's weakest category. In determining a facility's nursing rating, we weigh the number of hours nurses are with patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This place averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is well below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these metrics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
