Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded an impressive short-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ in that area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Short-term care grades are generally employed to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any facility in Indiana in this area with 64.4 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing rating also includes applicable quality-based measures. While this place excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it lagged a bit in some of the statistics that related to quality. This place's nursing rating was pulled down by its weak performance in the area of minimizing pressure ulcers. In fact, we found that 13.5 percent of this nursing home's residents sustained pressure ulcers. Since many pressure ulcers could be avoided with proper nursing protocols, we reduce a nursing home's nursing score when we see this kind of frequency of pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed was long-term care. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. Long-term care grades are commonly used to judge a nursing home's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services provided by a rehabilitation facility. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. We were somewhat surprised to discover that this facility vaccinated only 90.7563 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Nevertheless, this nursing home keeps its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 2.21 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most facilities since it had more complex patients.
