In addition to being a quality nursing home overall, this facility excelled in the area of short-term care, where it received an A+. Few facilities fared better in this area. In computing our short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is considered to be a reliable measure of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Washington in this area with 62.8 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an A-. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

This nursing home also performed well in the area of inspections. It earned a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. It received one of our best grades in that category with a grade of B+. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.

Turning to the final area, we awarded this nursing home a D in long-term care. This is the facility's least impressive category score. Sadly, this grade pulled down the nursing home's overall profile to a certain degree. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. Due to its grade in this category, it is surprising to find that this nursing home had favorable subcategory scores in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.35065 percent of its residents. This figure is actually higher than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.55 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
