Part of the reason this proved to be a decent nursing home is it earned a very favorable nursing score. Its nursing rating ended up being its best category. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. Nursing grades are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of moving a resident more often.

Inspections is another area where this nursing home excelled. In fact, we gave this facility a grade of B+ for our inspections rating. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies an imminent risk to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Additionally, we gave this facility a grade of B in our long-term care category. This is one of our better scores. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

The final area we looked at was short-term care. We awarded this facility a D for the area of short-term care, rendering this the facility's weakest grade. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. In this nursing home's case, it looks like it provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than a typical facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
