Facility Inspections
To pair with its decent overall score, we awarded this facility a grade of A for our inspections rating. This grade is far better than the facility's overall score. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. This nursing home was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
One of this facility's more respectable category grades came in the category of long-term care. This proved to be its second best category. In that area, we gave this facility a C. Our long-term care grades are based on a facility's quantity of nursing services. This includes a broad scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine medical services. This facility's vaccination statistics lagged a bit behind a few of the other statistics in this category, such as its nursing hours data. This facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 71.32169 percent of its patients. We'd love to see some improvement herein this statistic next year. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. This nursing home did not excel here either, with 6.47 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a middle of the road score in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of facilities with 51.1 percent of its residents returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
The final category we looked at was nursing, which was this facility's weakest category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this area. When determining our nursing grades, we analyze both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of those nurses. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the source of this facility's poor nursing grade. This facility provides 4.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is actually better than we expected. In determining our ratings, we add additional weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered nurses. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this facility's nursing grade substantially.
