Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a strong overall rating, this facility fared even better in our inspections category which is based on the nursing home's recent government inspections. In fact, we gave it an A for this area, which is one of our best scores. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility was awarded strong marks in the category of long-term care as well. In fact, we gave it one of our best scores in that area with a score of A-. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we finished looking at the amount of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. The nursing score consists of several datapoints, however, the primary one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients more often.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest area is short-term care, which is the final category we analyzed. For this area, we awarded this facility a D. We would like to to draw your attention to this potential weakness, however, you should not over-emphasize one area either. In calculating these short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to devise a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 3.1 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
