Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. Our nursing grade assesses the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the amount of time spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a system of turning residents more often.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Turning to our inspection category, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the facility's recent government inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite minor. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility also fared very well in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of A-. Only a select group of nursing homes fared better in this area. Short-term care grades are typically employed to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other licensed professionals. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. We found that 4.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

The fourth area we rated was long-term care, where this nursing home was awarded a grade of A-. This completed a very favorable report card. Not many facilities received an A- or better in all four categories. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 98.809525 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
