Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Among the reasons we rated this facility so well is that it was given a dominant long-term care grade. In fact, long-term care is its second highest category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. On top of providing elite levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This percentage is also significantly better than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.25 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
This facility received even higher grades in the area of nursing. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. We scrutinized the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses were with residents, in determining our score in this category. This facility provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is much more care than what is offered by most places. Lastly, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the number of its residents sustaining falls which lead to major injury, this place performed as well as any facility in the country.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored was short-term care, which was this facility's least impressive area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Nevertheless, we would not assess this facility based solely on a single weak area, since it was given some very strong scores in other areas. Our short-term care ratings are presumably more important for folks needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 29.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
