Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Inspection scores are tied to many items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care score. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality
The next most favorable area we awarded this facility in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a B-. In determining our short-term care ratings, we size up a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is more often than not a useful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to the next category, this facility was given a respectable nursing score. Although this isn't nearly as strong as several of its other grades, this is truly not a major area of concern. In determining a facility's nursing grade, we assess the number of hours nurses are seeing patients as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we like to look at quality-based statistics, such as the percentage of patients who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these metrics are measures of the quality of nursing care.
