Long-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this proved to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive long-term care score. In fact, this ended up being its best grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to providing well above average levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This figure is also much better than the average nursing home. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.99 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was strong in the category of short-term care, where it received a score of A-. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. In our short-term care rating, we seek to create a meaningful measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities with 64.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last category we scored is nursing. We gave this facility one of our more favorable grades in this area, with a grade of B. Although this wasn't as strong as some of its other scores, it is still a fine grade. The nursing score features many data points. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is an impressive statistic which typically corresponds with better quality care. Finally, this facility also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as predictive indicators of the caliber of nursing care provided.
