Facility Inspections
While this facility earned a decent overall grade, its inspections grade is notably more impressive than its overall grade. Due to a strong government inspection report this year, it received a strong score in that area with a grade of B+. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second highest area turned out to be its long-term care grade, where it was awarded a B-. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is better than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.57 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was less favorable than its other scores in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received its next highest category grade in the category of short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of B- in this category, which is a decent grade. Short-term care grades are often employed to score a facility's rehabilitation services In order to provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The key is determining what bearing this had on quality of care. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was a much stronger area for this facility. This place outperformed most nursing homes in this metric with 58.4 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we analyzed was nursing, which is this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave this facility a D in this area. Nursing ratings are tied to quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home provides 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
