Facility Inspections
While we didn't give this nursing home a good overall grade, we actually gave it a strong grade in the area of inspections, where it earned a B+. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid nursing homes that had too many severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
The second most favorable area we awarded this facility in any area came in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a B-. In determining our short-term care grades, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This score is generally a useful assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. The last metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients that returned home from the nursing home. This place performed better than most facilities in this metric with 50 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home actually received a decent grade in the area of nursing as well. We awarded it a grade of C for that category, which is not a bad score. Our nursing score looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. With 4.9 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this nursing home surpassed the national average. We also look at the qualifications of nurses and apply more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed admirably in this metric. Avoiding serious falls is generally a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a facility offers enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we scored is long-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this area. In computing our long-term care scores, we size up the assistance with daily living received by the nursing home's patients. After considering the quantity of nursing care, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinates 97.87234 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 4.82 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
