Registered Staff Hours
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. This place was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Lastly, this facility was flagged by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We prefer to avoid facilities with this designation. Please do your best to find an alternative nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also didn't grade out poorly in the area of long-term care. In fact, we awarded it a B- in that area, which wound up being another one of its more favorable grades. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 91.16719 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is somewhat less than we expected but still a respectable percentage. Fortunately, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.67 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Does this page answer your questions about Northwood Hills Care Center?
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. The nursing score features a variety of factors. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients. This nursing home provided only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is well below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care. This facility was given a rock bottom grade of F in this area. Our short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this facility provides significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical nursing home. The final metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 44.8 percent of its patients returning home.
