Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that area, which is one of our highest scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively minor. While this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facility's long-term care score is one of its respectable features. The facility received a C in this category. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 99.10179 percent of its residents. This nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Turning to the category of short-term care, this facility was given a grade of just D in that category. In determining our short-term care scores, we size up the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is often a fair assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Based on its weak score in this category, we weren't surprised to find that this place offers far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next category we looked at is nursing. This nursing home was given a rock bottom grade of F in this area. In determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the amount of time nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This place offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. On top of being below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
