Facility Inspections
Although this facility's overall grade was terrible, it actually fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid facilities that have too many severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, this facility only received a grade of D for its nursing grade, which was actually one of its better category grades. When calculating our nursing grades, we analyze both nursing hours and the training levels of the nurses. This facility offered just 3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This nursing home also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its low nursing hours. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this area. This is a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this nursing home's nursing score quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, we gave this facility a rock-bottom F in the area of short-term care. Our short-term care grade is often employed to score a nursing home's rehabilitation services In order to provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. With a grade in this range for this area, we weren't stunned to discover that this place was below average in two of the key staffing figures we focus on. The facility supplied substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 26.2 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we rated is long-term care. This nursing home received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in this area. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.24 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
