Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this place ended up being a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home was given strong marks in the category of short-term care. Consequently, it was given one of our highest grades in that area with a score of A+. Short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. Remarkably, this facility provides roughly 50% more hours of services from registered nurses and physical therapists than most facilities we looked at. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in New York in this area with 71 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on our next area, we gave this facility a grade of A for its long-term care score. This is a superb grade. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. One of the datapoints we considered on top of this nursing home's above average nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for seniors. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.85 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility was just about middle of the pack in this area.
Nurse Quality
The last area we scored is nursing, where this nursing home was given an A-. This completed an elite report card. Not many nursing homes earned an A- or higher in in each area we assessed. The nursing score features several data points. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provided 5.6 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This was one of the highest totals we found. Furthermore, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any facility the country. Preventing serious falls is generally an indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
