Facility Inspections
In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in our inspections category, where it earned an A+. Very few nursing homes fared as well in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Among its many elite grades, this facility was awarded a strong short-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a score of A in this area. Short-term care grades are crucial for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a vast range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it offered more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average facility. This is typically an encouraging sign. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in New York in this area with 62.2 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Our nursing grade is based on several factors, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is much better than what is offered by most places. Finally, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
In our final area, this facility also received a very strong long-term care score, with a grade of A-. This topped off a straight A report card. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the impressive level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were pleased by the facility's vaccination record. For example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.71 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
