Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is that it received an impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we awarded it an A. Our inspection scores are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
In addition, this facility also received favorable short-term care scores this year. Indeed, we awarded it one of our stronger grades in that area, with a score of B. Short-term care grades are typically employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To offer high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, it does not look like this facility submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.6 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at is long-term care, where this nursing home was awarded a B- in this category. For prospective patients in need of a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are very important. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid percentage. Finally, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our last area, this facility received a decent nursing grade of C. When computing a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also factored some quality-based metrics into our nursing scores. This nursing home was relatively weak in a few of the major areas we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable measures of the quality of nursing care offered.
