Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a great nursing home is it received a very impressive inspection grade. Inspections ended up being its best category. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively insignificant. We were not able to locate deficiency counts for this nursing home. We wish we had more information about this nursing home. Without the deficiency related data, it was difficult to grade this facility in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
Compounding its top-shelf accomplishments in other areas, we awarded this facility a score of A for its short-term care score. In calculating our short-term care scores, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This rating is generally a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. One of this place's strengths is that it provides more than an hour of care per day from registered nurses per patient. This is the gold standard in this metric, as it's about 50% higher than a typical nursing home's level of registered nurse staffing. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Indiana with 57.2 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients return home.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. The nursing score is based on a handful of subcategories, however, the main one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Of this total, more than one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We apply more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in computing our nursing ratings. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed was long-term care, in which this nursing home received a grade of B-. Although this proved to be its weakest category grade, this is nevertheless not a poor grade. With our long-term care grade, we focus on the quantity of care offered by a nursing home, as well as a handful of qualitative statistics. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility gave the vaccine to 94.117645 percent of its residents, which is an above average statistic. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 2.82 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than the majority of nursing homes since it had some more complex patients.
