Short-term Care Quality
This facility really excelled in our short-term care category, with an A- in this area. In determining these short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more than seven hours of care per week from registered nurses to each resident. This is really the gold standard in this area, as it's about 50% higher than the average facility's level of registered nurse staffing. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most facilities in this area with 53.7 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an B+. We looked at the qualifications of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses spent with patients, in determining our grade in this area. This nursing home provides an impressive 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Out of this total, nearly one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Lastly, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as just about any nursing home we looked at. Avoiding major falls is often a reliable indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
Among this facility's alarming category grades was an F for its inspection grade. More often than not, this means we found some red flags on the facility's inspection reports. For places with bad inspection grades, you should really focus on any severe deficiencies found on their inspection reports. This particular facility was assessed one category J through K deficiency, which rank among the worst deficiencies. These categories mean that CMS uncovered a deficiency which places resident health or safety in immediate jeopardy. Lastly, we also would like to point out that this place received significant government fines recently amounting to more than $100,000. This generally indicates that a facility's bad performance has been an issue for several years.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed is long-term care, which turned out to be this facility's weakest area. It received an F for this area, which is certainly a major concern. Nursing homes that do not fare well in this category typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. This facility's vaccination statistics lagged a bit behind some of its other statistics in this area, such as its nursing hours data. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 83.25123 percent of its residents. We would like to see some improvement in this area in the future. Surprisingly, this place wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 2.64 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad due to it having more complicated patients.
