Facility Inspections
Although this nursing home's overall score was as bad as it gets, it fared pretty well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key item to look for on these inspections. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities that have severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Incredibly, we awarded this facility a grade of C for our long-term care grade, which isn't too bad of a score. Long-term care grades are generally used to judge a nursing home's performance as a traditional nursing home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services offered by a rehabilitation facility. This nursing home's vaccination statistics weren't as favorable some of its other statistics in this category, such as its nursing hours. It gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 63.43115 percent of its patients. We would like to see some improvement in this area next year. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.99 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this place was also slightly below average.
Nurse Quality
We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Our nursing score focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the amount of time spent with residents. Based on the data, it looks like this facility provides an impressive 4 hours per patient each day. This is more nursing care than most facilities offer. In computing our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we rated is short-term care. This nursing home received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that area. In the area of short-term care, we try to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Based on its score in this category, we weren't surprised to find that this place was well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 19.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics was damning for this nursing home's short-term care score.
