Facility Inspections
To pair with a favorable overall score, we gave this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, this facility also was given favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. In fact, we gave it one of our more favorable grades in that area, with a grade of B+. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly is often a dangerous illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded a favorable short-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our better grades in that category with a grade of B+. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we size up a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is often a solid measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who returned home from the nursing home. This ended up being more of a strength for this nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Tennessee in this area with 64.2 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at was nursing, was this facility's worst area. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in that area. This was one of the few dings of an otherwise strong profile. The nursing rating features a host of data points. The most heavily weighted factor is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Unfortunately, this facility also did not perform as well as we hoped in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed for this category.
