Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great facility overall, it also received A+ government inspections recently. Its inspections are nearly flawless. Inspection scores weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to its top-shelf resume, this nursing home also was awarded an excellent long-term care grade, with a score of A. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are well cared for. In addition to providing elite levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also much better than most nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.41 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
Adding to its fine resume, this nursing home also received a superb short-term care score, with a grade of A-. Our short-term care scores are presumably more important for people in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing services. This includes not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. One reason for this nursing home's impressive score in short-term care is that it offers a significantly larger volume of physical therapist hours than the typical nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that returned home from this nursing home. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home with 57.9 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home was given a very strong nursing grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ in this category, topping off one of our more impressive report cards. The nursing category includes a handful of components, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was among the highest figures we found. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
