Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this place turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it earned an A+ inspection grade. This is as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Among its many dominant scores, this nursing home was awarded a strong long-term care score. In fact, it received a score of A- in this area. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 98 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.93 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes since it had more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A-. Our nursing score is based on the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of training of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning patients at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we looked at was short-term care, where this facility was awarded a grade of B. Believe it or not, this ended up being this nursing home's worst area. A nursing home could be doing a lot worse when it's worst score still outperforms most facilities. In determining our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is more often than not a fair measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most facilities. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. It performed better than most facilities in this area with 50.6 percent of its patients returning home.
