One of the reasons this ended up being a strong facility is that it earned an impressive inspection grade. Inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In that category, we gave it an A+. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.

This facility performed well in the category of short-term care. As a result, we gave it a grade of A- for that area, which happens to be one of our highest grades. Short-term care scores are important for residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents that returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home with 63.5 percent of its patients returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this statistic.

This facility's third best area came in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of C. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable datapoint. This nursing home keeps its patients out of the hospital. While it had 2 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.

Moving on to the fourth category, this nursing home received an acceptable nursing grade of C. Our nursing category includes a handful of components, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed admirably in this area. Avoiding serious falls is generally an indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a facility offers enough nurses to assist its patients.
