While we did not rate this nursing home well overall, we want to point out its much more favorable nursing grade this year. We gave it a B in this category, which was much better than its overall grade. When computing a facility's nursing rating, we assess the amount of time nurses are seeing patients and the levels of training of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

Another one of this nursing home's more impressive category scores came in the category of short-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a B. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Our short-term care grades are considered to be most important for people requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it performed respectably with 49.1 percent of its residents returning home.

Continuing to surprise us with some of its category grades, this nursing home actually earned a good score in the area of inspections as well. We gave it a grade of B- for that category. This is yet another strong grade for a nursing home that is really quite weak overall. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

The last category we looked at is long-term care, is this facility's least impressive area. We gave this nursing home a D in this category. Facilities that receive this kind of grade in this category may not provide the type of consistent around the clock care that some other nursing homes offer. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 91.57895 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be a few points lower than we were hoping for but still a decent figure. We were stunned with the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 4.38 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is more than twice the national average. This is definitely a concerning figure.
